Quilled Bag by Eli Motsay with Strap by Josh Brevik

The strap is a copy of one from CMCC which was collected by Sir John Caldwell who was stationed at both Niagara and Detroit during the American Revolution.

Copy and photos supplied by Eli Motsay.

  1. Do you think that strap was originally attached to a bag or a powderhorn? Are those natural dyes you are using on the porcupine quillwork? You certainly must have some time devoted to that!

  2. As with many of the extant period straps found in collections(individually, attached to objects, married pieces or otherwise) they are often interchangeable, not necessarily purpose specific. The Caldwell image depicts this strap, not what it is attached to. As for the use of natural dyes, it would be fantastic to use them on a regular basis IF one could achieve the correct colors consistent with original artifacts. I do know that in some cases, natural dyes are used, but in order to make a piece that is visually accurate, it is sometimes necessary to use other dye methods.
