Tinder Lighter with Silver Inlays, 17th Century

Tinder lighter with carved walnut body is profusely inlaid in patterns of scroll and horseshoe decoration of silver wires. The metal parts engraved with foliate decoration and the powder compartment finely, boxed jointed in the corners. A dovetailed slide top has a spring mechanism locking device. Carved bone with like spring lock and dovetailing completes the plant tinder box. Unusual, if not unique, right slanting caving of the grip. European, 17th century. Size: 10 oz Weight: H. 3.5" x L. 8.5" x W. 2" Condition: excellent.
