John Robert Roughton, Jr.

John Robert Roughton, Jr., 79, departed this life to be with His Lord on October 3, 2017. He was born on June 28, 1938, in Norfolk, Virginia, the first child of John Robert Roughton and Nellie Alexander Roughton. He graduated from Granby High School in 1956, and VA Tech Class of 1960, after four years in the Corps of Cadets, with a degree in Business.

He was commissioned in the US Army in 1960, served two years active duty, and after completion of reserve duty, resigned with the rank of Captain. He was predeceased by his father and mother, a step-mother, Marjorie Baldwin Roughton, and a sister, Gloria Jeanne. Bob, Jr., was married for over 50 years to Sylvia Moore Roughton and has three children: John R., III, Richard Alexander and Carolyn Michelle.

Pastor John III, a missionary in India is married to Zhepitoli and they have three children: Victoria Grace, John R., IV, and Ryan David. Son, Richard is married to Anne and currently serves as a Hospice Chaplain in Massachusetts. Daughter, Carolyn is employed by Joy Ministries in Tidewater.

Robert is also survived by a sister, Barbara Anne Tuttle and her husband, David. Bob, Jr., was a past President of both, the Mid Town Kiwanis Club and the Tidewater Automobile Dealers Association. He worked for 40 years at RoughtonPontiac Corp, the family business founded by his father, working his way up through every department and retiring as CEO.

He was an "old car" enthusiast. He enjoyed showing, judging and touring vintage automobiles. Locally he was an active member of the Tidewater Region Antique Car Club.

He loved American History and was inspired by the pioneer spirit of the early frontiersmen. This interest led him to an appreciation of the so called, "Kentucky Rifle" used by the early settlers, and led him to become a Charter Member of the Contemporary Longrifle Association. Blessed in so many ways during his 79 years by his Creator, he faithfully supported many Christian workers sent out to serve cross-culturally around the world from his local church, Kempsville Presbyterian.

Eternal rest grant unto Bob, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
